AC Oxgangs Reds under 13s striker John James was the hat-trick hero as his side thrashed Musselburgh Young Stars 8-3 to go through to the third round of the SPORTSassist South East Region Cup.

James fired the home side in front after six minutes when he turned and struck home following good build-up play between Aidan Hughes and Ali Lockhart. Musselburgh were soon level though, after netting from just inside the area.

Euan Boxall restored Oxgangs’ lead midway through the first half when he surged forward from midfield and ended his run by finding the net.

The home side’s defence wasn’t alert from the restart and Musselburgh levelled immediately as they took advantage of slack defending. Leo Cassidy would put Oxgangs ahead before the interval after James set him up.

AC Reds stretched clear of their opponents early in the second half with Cassidy scoring again, before James got his second of the day with a lovely effort from inside the area.

James showed he could produce another kind of finish for his third; netting from close range following a goalmouth scramble, with Burgh soon pulling another goal back.

William Gall would get himself on the scoresheet for number seven, but the best was left until last as Callum Murray surged from his defensive post and rifled a low strike into the net from the edge of the box.

Redhall Star 13s also went through to the third round with a 5-1 defeat of Tranent Colts Blues thanks to a terrific second-half performance.

James Rintoul opened the scoring for the home side after Murray Forson’s corner-kick was defected into his path. It was soon two for Star as Mathew Owenson won the ball of his own accord before running through to score.

Tranent pulled a goal back, but it was all Redhall after the interval, their third goal a particular highlight as a swift team move ended with Ryan Mutch curling into the bottom corner.

Rintoul increased their lead furthermore for his second of the game, and completed his hat-trick with their fifth and final goal.

Lasswade Thistle Reds 15s defeated Edinburgh South Ospreys 3-1, also on South East Region Cup weekend, with Jamie Wallace netting a double in the first half, before Lewis Booth made the victory secure.

Musselburgh Windsor 14s also progressed in their version of the competition, thanks to a 6-0 defeat of local rivals Haddington Athletic as Lewis Cleeton bagged a hat-trick amongst goals from Brodie Bland, Joseph Armstrong and Kyle Moodie.
