Youth wrap: Cup joy for comeback kings St Bernard's 13s

Saints were second best in the opening 35 minutes and they went 1-0 down as Young Stars’ Reuben Simpson netted. Although Saints levelled through Dylan Peacock, Young Stars were comfortable and they re-established their lead when Isaac Johnston raced through on goal and scored to make it 2-1.

It had been a fairly one-sided affair in the first half, but after some words of encouragement at the break, Saints came out and looked a different team altogether, passing the ball around with purpose and confidence.

Saints’ captain Declan Roose levelled the scores early in the second half and his side never looked back. Hamish Tait  added another five minutes later and Jacksen Lynch scored the goal of the game as he weaved in and out of the Young Stars defence before deftly clipping the ball past goalie Ritchie McArthur.

It was game, set and match for Saints at 4-2, but Roose still had time to grab another as late on as he scored directly from a corner.

• Currie Star 13s were crowned Polar Foods Cup winners after emphatically defeating St Bernard’s BC Mid Blues 13s 5-1 at Saughton Enclosure.

It didn’t always look so straightforward for Star though, as they had to come from behind after Saints took an early lead. Charlie Nicholl’s effort from the edge of the box flew high into the goal to give his side the perfect start.

It looked like Saints would go on to dominate, but Star  responded brilliantly when Matthew Darrington’s corner was rattled in by Cameron Elmslie at the back post to make it all-square.

A minute later, Elmslie then made it 2-1, prodding home after good work from Daniel Findlay.

Then, on the stroke of the interval, Star incredibly scored again as Darrington made it 3-1 with an effort that went in via the post.

Saints composed themselves  after the break, but they couldn’t stop Star from running away with the game. Findlay got his name on the scoresheet and Zack Neil rounded off  proceedings to make it 5-1.

• Tranent Juniors 19s defeated Longniddry Villa 19s 4-0 to stay on the coattails of Division 2 leaders Bonnyrigg Rose 19s.

Looking to follow in the footsteps of the first-team’s league triumph last weekend, the 19s kept the pace with Rose with a dominant performance.

Tranent made the ideal start when Jack Pullar burst down the left-hand side before cutting into the box and finding the bottom right-hand corner.

Soon after it was 2-0 to the hosts and deservedly so, with Longniddry struggling to deal with their opponents’ quality of play. Pullar this time turned provider as he teed up Tyler Connachan to side-foot home from close range.

With half-time just round the corner, Tranent then virtually put the game to bed as Pullar scored with a tidy strike just  inside the box.

Villa looked to get striker Nick Toner more of the ball in the second half, but Tranent kept it tight at the back. They pushed on, scoring a fourth of the afternoon to wrap things up through a Lloyd Fiddler penalty.
