Bonnyrigg Rose Colts 14s celebrate winning the South East Region Cup

Rose ended up worthy winners against their Division 1 league rivals, but gave themselves it all to do after an opening 15 minutes of the match which Tynie dominated.

Bonnyrigg goalkeeper McKenzie Watson had to be alert to palm wide James Scobie’s fierce effort from outside the area after seven minutes.

However, he could do nothing to prevent Josh Winnik’s header from the ensuing corner-kick – the Tynie defender escaping his marker to bullet a header into the back of the net.

Buoyed by the opener, Tynie looked likely to add to their lead with Rose camped inside their own half. However, they started to grow in confidence and used the outlet provided by the pacy Arran Laidlaw to cause Tynie problems of their own.

William Scott was presented with Bonnyrigg’s first chance on 27 minutes. He connected well with his effort from 16 yards but sent the ball wide of the target.

Laidlaw then found Jack Solway from a free-kick on the right but, from five yards, he sent his header over the bar. Winger Laidlaw almost got Rose off to a dream start in the second half but his shot was saved well by Tynie keeper  Aaron Heap.

Rose continued to remain on top of proceedings and finally got the goal their play merited on 50 minutes.

Laidlaw’s free-kick to the back post found Solway, who headed back across goal where Calum Glen rose to power a header home.

A combination of defender Winnik and keeper Heap on the line prevented Rose racing into a quick lead through Solway’s header.

Tynie woke up from their slumber and looked to prevent the tie going to extra-time.

Robbie Neave came closest with an audacious half-volley from fully 30 yards out which bounced just wide of Watson’s left-hand post.

Striker Sami El Yamani could have won it for Tynie with seven minutes remaining but he sent his shot narrowly wide. To win in extra-time often requires a bit of luck and composure – and Rose certainly got that as they grabbed what proved to be the winner eight minutes into the first of two ten-minute periods.

Scott’s ball from the left somehow found its way to the back post where Ryan Hodge was lurking to prod a cool finish past Heap.

Rose keeper Watson almost gifted Tynie an equaliser with a poor kick-out which Christopher McCallum sent back first-time. It looked to be going in, only for Watson to scramble back and recover to tip over.
