I made a welcome return to the Lake of Menteith near Aberfoyle for the SDFFA national championships.

Having fished in a club outing the day before and only managed to net three fish I was not too confident when others were coming in with bags well into double figures. However, after recieving sound advice from one of our club members I stuck to his tactics the whole day and they came good in the end.

Heading out I made for the hotel bay and the shallows to and was rewarded early on with a nice rainbow. Fishing a floating line with a fab on the point and two buzzers on the droppers left static was my tactic. The fish are hard fighting and refuse to be bullied.

Although I landed that one quickly and had a few other offers it went quiet. Taking a longer drift my boat partner, who was pulling, locked onto what looked like a good fish and a second later I was in. Whilst I landed mine my boat partner lost his, possibly being too hard on it. We moved up and down the bay and picked up another couple of fish before a change was called for. We headed for the Malling shore where I picked up two in quick succession and my partner landed one. With 45 minutes of the competition remaining we decided to head back to hotel bay where I landed a further two. The latter was a real slab of a fish, which had to be returned as I had my kill limit. At the weigh-in I was fortunate to have had enough fish to qualify for the Scottish team next year at Llyn Brenig in Wales.
