Golf: Haddington savour away day at Glen

HADDINGTON look the team to beat in this season’s East Lothian Winter League after opening their campaign with two away wins.

Neil Bain’s side followed up a fine victory at Musselburgh in their opening encounter by also picking up full points at the Glen, home of the defending champions.

Four-time Lothians champion Keith Nicholson joined forces with Brian McDonald to give Haddington the perfect start with victory over George Thomson and Graeme McCann in the top match.

David Warner, another former Lothians title holder, and George Blair also won the second match by 2 and 1 for the visitors, but a fightback from the Glen saw the match decided by the anchor tie.

It ended in Steve Smail and Glenn Anderson coming out on top for Haddington against Innes Christie and Graeme Noblett.

Haddington are joint-top with Tantallon and can now look to consolidate with their next two fixtures on home turf – against Longniddry, then Tantallon.

Tantallon, who made it two out of two with a comfortable home win over Longniddry, are at home again this Sunday, when Musselburgh come looking for their first points.

In Division 2, North Berwick opened their campaign with a bang as Gordon Milligan’s new-look team whitewashed Whitekirk.
