Chris O'Hare smashes his own 1500m Scotish record

The Capital star, 27, ripped exactly 1.5 seconds off his own Scottish 1500 metres record at tonight’s Diamond League meeting in Monaco to underline his form heading towards Berlin.

O’Hare set his previous best on the same track 12 months ago and delivered a late burst to finish ninth in 3:32.11 to move into sixth in the UK’s all-time rankings.

He was followed home in 12th by Edinburgh AC club-mate Jake Wightman who lowered his personal best to 3:33.96 to also jump inside the domestic top ten.

“To win a medal at Europeans, you have to be up there at the Diamond League,” O’Hare said. “Paris was great recently where the likes of Filip Ingebrigtsen and Jakub Holusa put up some great times.

“There’s more psychology in the distances races because there is more room for error. You have more time to second-guess yourself and more time to battle your own mind. I need to be constantly focused and constantly reminding myself why I’m here.”

Wightman will switch to the 800m on Sunday at the next Diamond League leg, the Muller Anniversary Games in London.

O’Hare will stick to the 1500m with Capital club-mate Josh Kerr getting one last crack to force his way into the British team for the Europeans despite his disappointing showing at the recent trials.

Lynsey Sharp and Guy Learmonth will get their final auditions for selection for Berlin over 800 metres. But Beth Dobbin has pulled out of tomorrow’s 100m to conserve her energies for the Europeans after her four-job schedule left her exhausted following her senior British debut at last weekend’s Athletics World Cup.

“I just struggled to get time off work after the World Cup so I’m still a little tired,” the Scottish 200m record holder confirmed.
