Duddingston’s David Miller enjoyed earning “revenge” as he knocked defending champion Alan Anderson out of the Lothians Championship in the second round at Longniddry.

In a repeat of last year’s semi-final at Duddingston, Miller won 4 and 2 as he covered the 16 holes in a respectable one-under-par in testing conditions on the East Lothian coast.

“We’ve both had success in games between us in the past, but Alan won the big one last year so it was good to get revenge,” admitted Miller, who now meets West Linton’s Sean Walter.

In a match that saw the opening seven holes exchanged, Walter dug deep to beat Bathgate’s Scott McClory, who has twice reached the fourth round in the Scottish Amateur in recent years. “I managed to get a couple up with some birdies around the turn but Scott was hard to shake off,” said Walter.

Tonight’s quarter-final line-up contains three Turnhouse players: Steven Armstrong, Jack McVey and Andrew Young.

Armstrong, a former winner and runner-up when the event was last held at Longniddry, won the first four holes with pars en route to a thumping 6 and 5 win over Bathgate teenager Scott McCandless.

McVey won the last to beat James Whitelaw (Craigielaw) and now takes on club-mate Young after he recovered from three down after five to beat Niall Webster (Broomieknowe).

Armstrong’s next opponent is the equally experienced Graham Robertson, who accounted for Kilspindie’s Rob Paterson, while the remaining last-eight clash is a ‘derby’ affair between Nathan Free (Musselburgh Old) and Benn McLeod (Musselburgh).

Two down after three to Kingsfield’s Jordyn Rhind, Free used his knowledge of the host course to win 2 and 1. “I work in the shop at Longniddry and will be turning assistant here in September,” he revealed. “I play the course almost every day so it feels like a home event for me this week.”

Second-round results: S Armstrong (Turnhouse) bt S McCandless (Bathgate) 6 and 5; G Robertson (Silverknowes) bt R Paterson (Kilspindie) 2 and 1; B McLeod (Musselburgh) bt R Brydon (Bruntsfield Links) one hole; N Free (Musselburgh Old) bt J Rhind (Kingsfield) 2 and 1; S Walter (West Linton) bt S McClory (Bathgate) 3 and 2; D Miller (Duddingston) bt A Anderson (Bruntsfield Links) 4 and 2; J McVey (Turnhouse) bt J Whitelaw (Craigielaw) one hole; A Young (Turnhouse) bt N Webster (Broomieknowe) 2 and 1.
