WEST are one win away from claiming the title in the new-look Fife and Lothians Golf Associations Winter League.

It follows a 3½-½ win over Fife, the defending champions, in the second round of matches at Bathgate, where East and Mid also drew 2-2.

In a clash between the two winners at Balbirnie Park a fortnight earlier, West handed out a rare defeat in the event to Fife.

The top match, which involved Bathgate’s Scott McClory and Graham Robertson for the hosts, ended all square. Mark Timmins (Pumpherston) and Gary Corrigan (Greenburn) then edged West in front with a comfortable 5 and 4 victory. The bottom two matches also resulted in West wins.

Keith Reilly (Silverknowes) teamed up with Craig Deerness (Harburn) for a 2 and 1 win, while Jordyn Rhind (Kingsfield) and Scott McCandless (Bathgate) prevailed by two holes in the anchor match.

Scottish champion Zander Culverwell was in action for East, but suffered defeat along with Dunbar club-mate Danny Kay. They went down by 2 and 1 to Mid’s David Miller (Duddingston) and Scott Johnston (Prestonfield).

The final round of matches are at Musselburgh on November 10.
