Bathgate’s Joseph Bryce will seek to stop Amateur champion Bradley Neil in his tracks after continuing his fine season in the Fairstone Scottish Amateur Championship at Downfied.

The 16-year-old is playing in national championships for the first time this season and has caught the eye with a number of fine displays.

Bryce, who beat St Andrews’ Mark Dickson by one hole in the first round yesterday, was set to take on Neil today. He said: “I’m still only 16 and this is the first time I’ve played in the Scottish Amateur. It’s the first time I’ve really played in a lot of events this season, but I’ve had some good results.

“I’m now looking forward to playing Bradley Neil in the next round which will be a good test. It’s also great to be selected for the Boys’ Home Internationals next week and I’m looking forward to playing for Scotland.”

Marriott Dalmahoy’s Murray Naysmith was also a top performer for the Lothians on day one, seeing off Jeff Wright of Forres 5&4. Naysmith was five under par for 14 holes and next faces Ryan Campbell of Falkirk, who surprised Daniel Young (Craigie Hill) with his victory at the 19th.

Liberton’s Anthony Blaney progressed late in the day, but Rob Paterson (Kilspindie), Callum Cochrane (Marriott Dalmahoy) and James Ross (Royal Burgess) were among those to exit.
