The strong Lothians contingent made good progress on day one of the Scottish Boys’ Championship at West Kilbride, with Marriott Dalmahoy’s Murray Naysmith perhaps the most relieved to progress.

The SGU National Boys’ player, much-fancied over the Ayrshire links this week, found himself three down at the turn to Lochwinnoch’s Fraser Lawrie.

Giving himself a shake on the tenth tee, he decided to be “ruthless” and “attack”. The results were immediate as the 2013 Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Jug winner reeled off five holes in a row to turn the tie around and stand two up on the 15th tee.

“I think I need to be ruthless no matter who I’m playing,” said Naysmith after his one-hole victory. “I worked hard over the winter, but I’ve not played much match play so I’m just feeling my way back into it.”

Naysmith was one of the five seeds to progress on day one, after 256 hopefuls set out for glory in the SGU’s flagship boys’ event. Top seed Ewen Ferguson, Calum Fyfe, Stuart Easton and Niall McMullen were the others to emerge victorious.

The Lothians enjoyed various successes with Naysmith joined by the likes of Connor Good (Musselburgh), Christopher Curran (Harburn) and Scott McCandless (Bathgate) in reaching round two. McCandless needed to go to the 20th to see off the challenge of St Andrews’ Alasdair McDougall in a tight game.

Alastair Thurlow from Murrayfield also came through his opening tie, as did David Rudd of Longniddry. Andrew Ni, also of Murrayfield, progressed with a 2&1 success against Crieff’s Calum Graham.

Selected first-round results: R Paterson (Kilspindie) bt J Bingham (Whitecraigs) 7&6; C Good (Musselburgh) bt J Allan J (Balbirnie Park) 4&3; S McCandless (Bathgate) bt A McDougall (New Club St Andrews) at 20th; C Farrell (Longniddry) bt B Bannerman (Strathmore) 4&2; T Foster (Merchants of Edinburgh) bt B McAdam (Alloa) 7&6; C Curran (Harburn) bt A Smith (Edzell) 7&5; A Fotheringham (Duddingston) bt M Friel (Sandyhills) 2&1; A Thurlow (Murrayfield) bt S Burns (Caldwell) 4&3; M Naysmith (Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club) bt F Lawrie (Lochwinnoch) 1 up; L Breslin (Fereneze) bt B Calder (Turnhouse) at 19th; I Ferguson (Drumpellier) bt J Cummings (Uphall) at 22nd; D Rudd (Longniddry) bt C Whyte (Murrayfield) 1 up; C Algeo (Longniddry) bt J Parker (Southerness) 3&2.
