Rory Smith made a sparkling debut as Lothians got the new season off to a winning start against Stirlingshire at Glenbervie.

The visitors triumphed 8-4, helped by Dalmahoy player Smith winning both of his games.

He joined forces with Bathgate’s Simon Lockhart to record a one-hole morning triumph as Lothians took the foursomes 3.5-0.5. Then, in the afternoon singles, Smith added a 3&1 victory over Stirling’s Ben Liddell.

Other singles successes for Keith Reilly’s side were delivered by Mike Bacigalupo (Longniddry), Michael Wilson (Kingsfield) and Lockhart while Barrie Lewis (West Lothian) contributed with a half.

“It was a good team performance,” said Reilly, who will be keeping an eye on upcoming Scottish Golf events for the next test against Northumberland at the end of next month.

They include this weekend’s Scottish Champion of Champions at Leven and the Craigmillar Park Open, which takes place a fortnight later.
