Stephen McAllister scents victory at Archerfield

THE man from next door had the scent of victory in his nostrils heading into today’s final round of the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open at Archerfield Links.

Stephen McAllister, who is a member at neighbouring Renaissance Club, went into the closing circuit just two shots off the lead on the East Lothian coast.

A two-times winner on the European Tour, McAllister is chasing his maiden victory on the Senior circuit, where his best effort to date was a share of fourth in Bad Ragaz in Switzerland three years ago.

“Whether it’s a bounce game or an event like this, I still have a bug for winning,” said the 53-year-old after carding a second-round 72 to sit in a share of sixth on one-under-par – two shots behind joint-leaders Paul Broadhurst and Gordon Manson.

One of three joint-overnight leaders, course designer DJ Russell, slipped to 50th after an error-strewn 84.

A 71 moved Andrew Oldcorn up ten spots to joint 29th.
