Top-20 spot for Matthew in US Women’s Open

NORTH BERWICK’S Catriona Matthew took her 2013 earnings to just under £270,000 with a top-20 finish in the US Women’s Open at Sebonack.

The Scottish No. 1 closed with a 75 for a six-over-par total of 294, tying for 15th as South 
Korean, Inbee Park, claimed her third major of the season.

Park pipped Matthew in a play-off for the second of those successes, the LPGA Championship, and the pair will lock horns again in the British Women’s Open at St Andrews at the end of this month.

n JAMES ROSS (Royal Burgess) celebrated his Scotland call-up by finishing joint-fourth in the East of Scotland Open at Lundin.

A late addition to the field after missing the cut in the Brabazon Trophy, Ross shot rounds of 72, 71, 70 and 73 over for a total of 288.

After tying on 285, Cawder’s Jamie Savage birdied the third extra hole in a play-off against Aberdour’s Scott Crichton to lift the title.

n FIRST-ROUND leader Lloyd Saltman (Archerfield Links) had to settle for a tie for fifth in the Karnten Open on the Challenge Tour in Austria.

A closing 71 left him on 12-under – five behind South African winner Dylan Frittelli.
