Grace Reid aiming to make it three medals in Edinburgh

The 22-year-old finished second to Germany along with Sheffield’s Ross Haslam in the 3m mixed synchro event on Wednesday.

That result left her in seemingly relaxed and confident mood and since then Reid has been training hard ahead of a bid to earn three medals at this meet in her home city.

Tomorrow she will be diving in the women’s 3m event. The prelims first at 9.30am and the final is at 5pm for the top 12 out of 22. Reid will have five dives to make sure she gets through to fight for a medal.

The field is pretty strong with athletes such as Anna Pysmenska of Ukraine and Michelle Heimberg of Switzerland, who finished in the gold and silver medal places in the Europeans in Kiev last year, likely to lead the way.

Reid finished eighth in this event at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and ninth at the Commonwealth Games in Australia earlier this year.

However, that latter finish came just 24 hours after she had won a sensational gold in the women’s 1m event on the Gold Coast and she had not been able to sleep well.

Ahead of tomorrow she has had a couple of days away from competition and should be feeling fresh.

She will also team up with Leeds’ Katherine Torrance in the women’s 3m synchro event on Sunday (12.30pm).

Meanwhile, Jack Laugher could not make it three golds for the meet today, having to settle for a silver in the men’s 3m synchro event with partner Chris Mears.

Great Britain’s Laugher and Mears had won this event at the Olympics two years ago and the former went into this contest in the Capital with the men’s 1m and the men’s 3m gold medals already to his name.

However, on the day the duo came up against an inspired Russian pair. Evgenii Kuznetzov and Ilia Zakharov posted 431.16 points from their six dives with Laugher and Mears on 430.62. Germany (394.77) grabbed the bronze.
