Grange hockey into Scottish Cup last eight

Frank Ryan today refused to be drawn into forecasting what Grange hockey club can achieve this season.

That’s despite the club’s under-strength side marching into the quarter-finals of the men’s Scottish Cup - along with holding pole position in Division One.

The coach closed the scoring for the Stockbridge side with Joe Waterston and Todd Mills also counting in a 4-2 victory against Hillhead.

The margin could have been greater as Grange dominated large sections of the play at Fettes but Ryan said: “Yes, we’re going well but we’re a developing team and are working hard to improve.

“Part of our improvement must go down to the work of our new strength and conditioning coach, Ross Marwick.”

Hillhead’s goals came from former Edinburgh University player Callum Duke Ewan Campbell.

Injury-hit Edinburgh University, runners-up in the past two seasons, had to come from 2-0 down on the road to edge out the University of St Andrews 3-2.

Ian Moodie claimed a double, both from close range, and Gordon Amour scored a penalty flick. Coach Graham Moodie said: “I think we were worth the win and pleased to be in the next round.

“We are confident that we can beat anyone on our day and are pleased to be in the draw for the quarter-final.”

Division One title contenders, Grove Menzieshill, one of the cup favourites, ended Division Two side Inverleith’s hopes with 4-0 success at Dundee.
