The 22-year-old local hero shared the halfway lead in the Carrick Neill Scottish Open Stroke-Play Championship after opening rounds of 66
and 69 at the East Lothian venue.

But he had to settle for a share of second spot after 17-year-old Aussie ace Cameron John shot a course-record 63 in the third round then closed with a 68 for a four-shot victory.

“I’m happy with how my game was over the last three days,” insisted Forrest, the Scottish No.1 who lives in North Berwick and is a member at Craigielaw.

“In fact, it is the best I’ve hit my irons for as long as I can remember while I only hit a couple of loose drives.”

The Walker Cup player now turns his attention to the St Andrews Links Trophy, an event he won two years ago after beating fellow Scot Bradley Neil in a play-off.

“The courses for that suit my game and it is always great to play the Old Course,” added Forrest.

“Last year was a bit different due to the weather being horrendous but it’s an event that holds great memories for me so we will see what happens this weekend.”

John bagged eight birdies in setting a new amateur course record on the No.1 course and reckoned it was all down to his “lucky” clothing.

“The last time I wore this outfit I shot 10-under at my home course,” said the Commonwealth Golf Club member.
