Hockey: Grange getting ready for crucial weekend of hockey

ROB BARR, Grange’s cultured defender, today outlined the importance of this weekend’s hockey double-header in the league and Scottish Cup.

The Stockbridge-based side travel to Kelburne, the newly-crowned Division One champions, for a noon start tomorrow seeking a victory to secure second place in the final table.

And, on Sunday (12.15pm), Grange clash with city rivals Inverleith in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup at Peffermill.

Barr is determined to succeed on both fronts and would love to put an end to Kelburne’s 16-match winning run and secure a place in the cup final.

Grange have 36 points from 16 games while third-placed Western, who have played a game more, have 35 points.

Barr said: “I hear they have injury problems but they have such a big squad. Grove Menzieshill beat them last year in the run-in and somebody has to stop their run. We’re going well but we’d love to claim second place as it would secure a European berth for us next season. We go there looking for points and we’re also looking to advance into the cup final.

“Games against Inverleith are always tough and they will probably be at full-strength. We won 4-0 when we last met but that flattered us a bit.”

Kelburne play holders Western in the other cup semi-final at Peffermill on Sunday (3.45pm).

At the bottom of the league table, CALA Edinburgh aim to ease their relegation fears by beating Clydesdale at Meggetland on Saturday (11am) in their final league game.

Victory would ease the Edinburgh side on to 15 points, one ahead of fellow strugglers Hillhead who still have to play Grange in a game yet to be arranged following last Saturday’s abandonment at Peffermill.
