Hockey: Grange into second after fourth win

GRANGE playcaller Colin Clarke today admitted his success-hungry side have much to work on ahead of Saturday’s trip to Grove Menzieshill.

The Capital hockey team moved into second place in Division One after a 2-1 victory over the Edinburgh University side at Peffermill yesterday.

They are on 12 points following four straight wins, the same as defending champions Kelburne, but have a goal difference of 12 compared to 24.

Colin MacIver opened the scoring and Phil Sully added a second before the break. Callum Duke replied for the students.

The victory sealed a weekend win double for Grange, who claimed a 4-0 victory over Western at Peffermill on Saturday, Sully, Robert Barr from a penalty corner, Matt Connor and Guy Murdoch netting.

Inverleith, who were second, slip to third after their home clash with Dundee Wanderers was postponed as their opponents were stuck in traffic on the Forth Road Bridge.

Meanwhile, Mark Ralph led by example as champions Kelburne wrapped up win No. 4 in defence of their Division One title. The player-coach scored twice and Scotland striker Johnny Christie claimed four goals in the 12-2 demolition of West of Scotland rivals Clydesdale at Bellahouston.

Clydesdale’s Stuart Brown was taken to hospital after a second-half collision with Christie which forced the Glasgow side to play without a goalkeeper in the later stages of the game.

Grove Menzieshill made their scheduled clash with newly-promoted CALA Edinburgh 25 minutes late and arrived with a wrong coloured strip.

Once that had been sorted out, they went 3-2 up only for former Inverleith forward Ramsay Bell to net the equaliser less than ten minutes from time.
