Hockey: Imrie’s strike ends West’s four years of domination

HAMISH IMRIE fired the winner as East District ended the three-year domination of West at Scottish under-16 level in hockey.

The glory strike was a magnificent seventh during the two-day tournament from the hard- running Fettes College forward.

Imrie’s strike came from a penalty corner and the 15-year-old looked a real prospect.

East, beaten 2-0 by West in the qualifiers on Saturday, went ahead through a well-taken breakaway strike from Loretto student Cameron Good.

West levelled before the break thanks to Hillhead youngster John Reid but Imrie’s strike into the bottom right-hand corner mid-way through the second-half was enough.

David Guy, now in his fourth year as coach to the under-18 boys, said: “My squad were the ones who wanted it most. I was happy with the performance in the qualifiers as I believed we could win this and they did. They worked hard in the final minutes to ensure we took the cup for the first time in four seasons.”

Guy, who was assisted by Chris Duncan, added: “I believe around 12 of my squad will play at representative level for Scotland in the future.”

Skipper Lewis Fraser played despite being carried off with a foot injury in Saturday’s defeat by West and midfielder Simon Whait (Loretto) jetted to South Africa yesterday on a high as part of a cricket exchange. He also plays under-age cricket for Middlesex.

East’s under-18 side, meanwhile, lost out 6-2 to West in their final.
