Hockey: University coach Moodie wants joy of six

Graham Moodie believes Edinburgh University can finish the Scottish hockey season with six straight wins, starting on Sunday when Gordonians visit Peffermill (noon).

Ross McIntyre, recruited from current Division One leaders Kelburne, will make his debut and Uni coach Moodie believes the player will boost the club’s attacking options. The students go into the game after securing a place in the quarter-finals of the British Universities and Colleges Cup for the first time with a 4-3 win over Cambridge at Peffermill.

Moodie, whose team are seventh in Division One with 16 points, said: “Wednesday (against Cambridge) was not our best performance but the result was what we were looking for. Finishing in the top four in Division One is out of our hands at the moment and we’d like to get ourselves into a position where this becomes a realistic target.

“We have six massive games in the second half of the season and we believe we are capable of winning all six. That is not to say that we will be underestimating any of our opposition. We’re focusing on one game at a time and our first game will be very tough.”

Elsewhere, Grange, who are third, entertain second-placed Grove Menzieshill (Fettes, 2pm) with both teams on 25 points although the Dundee side have a game in hand.
