Horse Racing: Lucy looking good for a double

Those victories came from just 30 rides for a 20 per cent strike rate and a healthy level stake profit on the track. She can continue that good form with a double there tomorrow. She partners Or de Grugy for her father – and boss – Nick in the concluding Turf TV Handicap Chase (3.30) and her 3lb allowance can prove invaluable in this three-mile chase.

She was on board when the ten-year-old won at Kelso last month and the gelding is something of a Kelso specialist, having landed his last five victories there. That latest success was his first win for two years and he had slipped down the official ratings, but the handicapper has put him back up 8lb.

So having Miss Alexander to help nullify that rise will be a big help and although Or de Grugy has yet to score at Musselburgh, he has been placed on several occasions here both over hurdles and fences.

Miss Alexander can initiate her double on Angel Sun in the Edinburgh Evening News Beginners Chase (2.30). The  six-year-old has yet to win a race, but has been runner-up in four of his ten starts. He was second in a bumper at Sedgefield and then occupied the same position there over timber almost exactly a year ago.

The gelding has three half-brothers who all won over the larger obstacles and, after finishing second over hurdles on his reappearance at Kelso, he turned in a fine effort when runner-up on his chase debut on that same track just a fortnight ago. He will have learnt from that experience, is still lightly raced and can uphold the family tradition by landing the spoils here.

Forster Street made all the running when scoring over ten furlongs on the flat at Beverley in July, after which trainer Tim Easterby confided that the three-year-old had been schooling well over hurdles.

The gelding was sixth at Sedgefield when he did make his debut over timber in September and then finished fourth at Kelso where he faded on the stiff run-in. He did, however, show that he will make a success of the winter game when staying on well to finish second at Wetherby recently.

The Glow-worm Renewable Technology Juvenile Hurdle (1.30) appears to afford him an excellent opportunity to go one better.

Jeu de Roseau has six career victories to his credit – three on the level and three over hurdles – and Denis O’Regan has been on board for two of the wins in the latter sphere, so it is worth noting that the Irishman will be in the saddle again in the Racing UK November Handicap Hurdle (3.00).

He steered the gelding to two wins over two-and-a-half miles at Sedgefield last term and the eight-year-old kept on nicely under O’Regan when third on his reappearance over an extra quarter of a mile at Wetherby last month. The combination step up again in trip tomorrow but it should pose no problems, while trainer Chris Grant has hit form with three winners in the past week.
