The Twenty20 event – with a new-look nine-team league format leading to semis and then a final – began on Tuesday evening with a bang.

Southwell led the way with a superb 102 and was given strong support by ex-Ireland cricketer Rory McCann (53) as Carlton made 208-3 batting first against Edinburgh Accies.

Accies did their best in reply, but were eventually bowled out for 141 to lose at Grange Loan by 67 runs.

On the same night, Mateen Butt made it 431 runs for the season already for Edinburgh with 81 against Watsonians.

However, Liam Hindmarsh made 80 and Andrew Cockburn scored 78 and took three wickets as the holders won at Campbell Park.

On Thursday evening, Heriot’s were pushed hard by RH Corstorphine at East Barton Avenue.

The visitors posted 130-7 batting first and then 4-20 with the ball from Weeraratna – including a hat-trick – helped them to restrict RH Corstorphine to 118 all out in a close tussle.

A youthful Mazars Grange side, led well by the efforts of Gordon Goudie, eased past Musselburgh by 10 wickets.
