Ice hockey: Seawolves’ star Leinweber adds bite to Capitals line-up

EDINBURGH CAPITALS have boosted their squad for the remainder of the 2012-13 ice hockey season with the signing of Canadian utility player Curtis Leinweber.

Leinweber, who spent the last four years alongside current Caps winger Jade Portwood at the University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, can play both defence and forward and Portwood expects the 24-year-old Calgary native to be a big hit with the Capitals fans.

Portwood said: “When Curtis plays in a defensive position he’s got an excellent first pass and can lead the rush with the puck. When he plays as a forward he can hold onto the puck well and he can finish.”

Leinweber was the top points scorer for the Seawolves in his senior year, and was recommended to the Capitals by ex-Murrayfield Racers player and current Seawolves head coach Dave Shyiak. He will be in the line-up for Edinburgh’s trip to league leaders Belfast Giants on Saturday.

Player-coach Richard Hartmann said: “As the NHL lockout has continued the market in North America has changed and opened up the opportunity to bring Curtis to Edinburgh.”
