Feeling the effects of a fierce ferry crossing in the midst of Storm Abigail, Edinburgh Capitals were blown away in the early stages of their Elite League game at Belfast Giants tonight, eventually going down 6-3.
Edinburgh, disappointed by news that new signing Brandon Coccimiglio hadn’t received international clearance to play, trailed 5–0 less than 20 minutes in, although David Rutherford pulled one back for the visitors in the dying seconds of the period.
An improved Edinburgh made it 5-2 minutes later, Trevor Gerling scoring the only goal of the second period from close range after getting on the end of an excellent Rutherford pass.
Rutherford had an effort off the crossbar as Caps – with three early third-period power-plays – couldn’t make further inroads.
Rutherford eventually scored his second with just over five minutes remaining, showing great hands to beat Murphy, after again being set up by Gerling.
Edinburgh, now throwing caution to the win, paid a late price AS Mike Wilson scored on the breakaway with 90 seconds left, wrapping up the game for the Giants for whom Colin Shields, Mike Radja, James Desmarais, Michael Forney and Matt Nickerson also scored.
