Capitals lose discipline on difficult night in Milton Keynes

Indisciplined Edinburgh Capitals were beaten 8-2 by Milton Keynes Lightning in Buckinghamshire last night.

Ainears Podzins put Edinburgh Capitals into a first-period lead

Edinburgh, giving a rare start to teenage net-minder Jordan McLaughlin, conceded 12 power-play opportunities to a rampant Lightning. However, with club officials unable to provide player-coach Michael D’Orazio with a squad that has any realistic chance of competing in Britain’s top flight, player frustration is understandable.

The game opened in a flurry of goals. McLaughlin was beaten in the third minute by a Ben Foster effort, which was cancelled out just a minute later through Igor Valeyev.

Despite a cross-check call against Patrik Moisio, Edinburgh took the lead midway through the first period, Ainars Podzins scoring short-handed.

With Caps in further penalty trouble, Milton Keynes equalised on the power-play in the 16th minute through Carl Hudson.

After the interval, the home side dominated, building a three-goal lead through a power-play marker from Christian Isackson, a Kevin King effort and Foster’s second of the game. They rained 24 shots on the Capitals net, which saw McLaughlin replaced by regular No.1 Tyler Beskorowany.

The change in keeper did little to stem the tide, however, Lightning firing a total of 63 shots on the Capitals net with Foster completing his hat-trick in between goals for Denny Kearney and a second of the night for Isackson.
