Edinburgh Capitals went down to a 7-2 defeat at Sheffield Steelers last night in a game that saw an incredible five goals in the final two minutes.
With Edinburgh trailing 3-1, Capitals player-coach Michael D’Orazio threw caution to the wind, withdrawing the excellent Tyler Beskorowany – who had made 45 saves – for an extra skater.
Sheffield’s Mathieu Roy then claimed his second of the night into the empty net to make it 4-1 before Ainars Podzins scored Edinburgh’s second goal of the game. A further empty-net goal from former Capitals defenceman Ben O’Connor and two further strikes from David Philips and Kieran Brown – all in the final minute – brought the curtain down on what had been a stuffy display from the Murrayfield outfit.
Caps, outshot 18 to four in the opening period, held out for 25 minutes before Roy opened the scoring, Levi Nelson doubling the home side’s advantage two minutes later. Steelers’ Eric Neiley made it three before Dylan Anderson pulled a goal back for the Caps with an unassisted marker in the 37th minute.
Edinburgh, supplemented by four players from their academy programme, could only muster nine full-time squad members for the first match of their midweek away double header which continues tonight at Milton Keynes Lightning.
