The Elite League today confirmed they’d received an application from Murrayfield Racers to play in next season’s top flight.

Racers Leisure Limited – led by David Hand, the current chairman of the Scottish Ice Hockey Association – have secured the ice-time contract at Murrayfield Ice Rink and aim to create a new team in the UK-wide league.

If successful, the move would almost certainly spell the end for the Edinburgh Capitals after 20 years playing the sport in the city.

An Elite League statement released today read: “The EIHL Board met on Tuesday for their regular monthly meeting. The EIHL discussed in detail the issues relating to the Edinburgh Capitals and the ice time agreement at Murrayfield Ice Rink. The league can confirm that it has received an application from Racers Leisure Ltd for inclusion in the Elite League starting in the 2018/19 season. The EIHL has today written to all interested parties requesting further information relating to their interest in participating in the league next season.”
