It was the fifth time the Murrayfield side were hit for ten goals or more on a night where five of their better performers were missing through injury, replaced by youngsters drafted in at the last minute.

Alexander Mokshantsev opened the scoring after seven minutes before Robert Lachowicz doubled the lead after 13 minutes as Panthers settled themselves into the game. But soon Capitals collapsed and never recovered.

Mike Vaskivuo made it 3-0 40 seconds later with quickfire finishes coming from Eric Lindhagen, Mark Derlago and Jordan Kelsall all netting to put Nottingham 6-0 up after only the opening 20 minutes.

Edinburgh got one on the board from Ainars Podzins, who swept in a bouncing puck to get the second period underway in positive, but it was shortlived as the home side restored their six-goal lead with another from Mokshantsev.

It kicked off another barrage of goals at Mathieu Gagnon, Zack Phillips, Kelsall’s second and one from Brett Perlini all found the net to put Nottingham 11-1 after two periods and effectively secure their play-off berth.

Number 12 came from Mark Derlago in the latter stages of the third period to compound another bad night for Edinburgh.
