Edinburgh Capitals’ miserable form away from Murrayfield continued tonight, proving no match for Sheffield Steelers in South Yorkshire, who ran out 6-1 winners.

Late first-period goals from former Braehead Clan defence-man Zack Fitzgerald and Mattheu Roy gave Sheffield a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Capitals forward Trevor Gerling couldn’t make the most of a short-handed breakaway early in the second period, before a double from Colton Fretter put the game beyond a disjointed Capitals side.

A 42nd-minute snipe from Edinburgh man-of-the-match Gerling, after great hustle behind the net from Callum Boyd, got the visitors on the board, but any faint hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished when Fretter completed his hat-trick just two minuter later. Roy rounded off the scoring with his second, and Steelers’ sixth goal of the night, with less than two minutes remaining.

Caps face Braehead Clan at Murrayfield on Sunday, face-off 5.30pm.
