Giant performances from team enforcer Riley Emmerson and goalie Tomas Hiadlovsky helped move Edinburgh Capitals into a play-off position with a 2-1 win after penalty shots over Cardiff Devils at Murrayfield last night.

6ft 9in Emmerson opened the scoring in the first period and, after Cardiff levelled in the 43rd minute through Jake Morissette, showed silky hands in the shoot-out to roof a backhand high past Devils net-minder Ben Bowns in the final round to give the home side the extra point.

Caps fell foul of match referee Tom Darnell in giving away seven power-play opportunities but Hiadlovsky was in outstanding form, making 41 saves, as the Murrayfield men were outshot on the night 42 to 17.

The result, Edinburgh’s fourth win in their last six games, sees them move one point clear of Coventry Blaze in the race for a play-off place, However their lead could be short-lived as Blaze play Belfast Giants twice at home this weekend, with Caps not back in action until a week today, also against the
