Flyers and Caps take time but eventually ice hockey clash is called off

Edinburgh Capitals' away clash with Fife Flyers, due to be played tonight in Kirkcaldy, has eventually been postponed due to the severe weather that has engulfed the country.

A decision was taken to call off the Elite League match at 3.15pm today after a tweet from Flyers earlier in the day suggested that match would go ahead despite the atrocious snow and wind and a red alert from the Met Office.

All professional football matches in Scotland were called off early this morning, while every leisure centre in Fife closed at midday. Furthermore, the Met Office had issued advice for people to stay indoors and avoid travel in central Scotland earlier in the day.

Flyers put out a tweet at 10am posting: “Tonight’s game vs @edcapitals will go ahead as planned, 7.30pm face-off. Both ourselves & @edcapitals management are monitoring the weather.

“We would ask fans to keep checking our website & social media platforms for updates, in case anything should change.”

Many supporters demanded that the game be cancelled immediately, with Caps’ interim player/coach Mike D’Orazio even tweeting: “Cancel this game @FifeFlyers, @edcapitals ... total disregard to people’s well being. Hockey is only a game. Lives matter more. @officialEIHL”

By this afternoon, Flyers released a statement that read: “Following on from discussions with the home team, away team and all officials throughout the course of the day, Fife Flyers can confirm the game has been cancelled.

“Due to the congestion with the March fixtures, we do not have an alternative date in mind, however we will keep fans posted on this and update as soon as possible.”
