Out in the first match, Law was three-over after three in the early-morning frost before hitting back to card a level-par 69. But his hopes of a victory on home soil were dashed when Tour pro McLeary came in later in the day with a 67.

That was matched by a net effort from Harburn five-handicapper Robin Cockburn but the Alliance Trophy went to Dalmahoy-attached McLeary by virtue of a better inward nine of 33 versus 34.5.

McLeary’s scratch score was the best on the day by a shot, pipping Cameron Adam (Harburn), Chris Curran (Bathgate) and Chris Morris (Kingsknowe).

Cockburn’s consolation was the top handicap prize, beating Baberton’s Gordon Brown also by a shot. Top trainee was James Dick (Duddingston) on 70 while the senior spoils were shared on 71 by four players, including Alliance veteran Stuart Wardlaw from Harburn.
