Josh Taylor impresses with first-round stoppage

There's simply no stopping Prestonpans boxer Josh Taylor who secured the fifth victory of his professional career with a first-round stoppage of Miguel Gonzalez at Cardiff's Ice Arena on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old lightweight is slowly building a reputation for himself for first-round stoppages – the third fight where his opponents have failed to last beyond the first round. Only Archie Weah and Lyes Chaibi have fared marginally better with Taylor until the second round to get the job done.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist was again in menacing form against Honduran Gonzalez, a boxer with 13 wins to his name, sending the South American to the canvas with a stiff left jab.

“I felt good and sharp in there,” Taylor said. “I got the job done early. I had three late changes of opponents this week but onwards and upwards and onto the next one.”

Taylor confirmed to the Evening News last week he expects to be fighting on Ricky Burns’ WBA world super lightweight title bill at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Saturday, May 28, but is still waiting on the go ahead from Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn.
