Judo: Purssey and Gordon pocket bronze at World Cup

Edinburgh’s Matt Purssey and James Austin both claimed bronze medals at the Judo World Cup in Liverpool.

Purssey beat his veteran GB team-mate Winston Gordon in the 90kg class after losing in the semi-finals to German gold medallist Christophe Lambert.

“I knew I was capable of getting the bronze and I put in a lot of effort to win it, so I’m very pleased with myself,” said Purssey.

Austin overcame Frenchman Mael Le Normand in the 100kg bronze medal match and said: “It’s great to get a medal in front of a home crowd and in such a good competition.”

Club-mate Chris Sherrington was unlucky to draw eventual gold medallist Daniel Rodrigues of Brazil in the first round of the heaviest weight category.

Meanwhile, at the women’s World Cup in Rome, Edinburgh’s Sarah Adlington was denied bronze at 78kg by Turkish player Belkis Zehra Kaya.
