Kieran Cantley continues his rise with East Alliance success

KIERAN CANTLEY enhanced his growing reputation as one of the rising stars of Capital golf by upstaging the professionals.

The Liberton teenager claimed his notable triumph as the Edinburgh & East of Scotland Alliance visited Eyemouth for its latest event.

Cantley, who helped Scotland win the Boys’ Home Internationals in Wales last summer, came in late in the day with a three-under-par 69 (34-35) at the Berwickshire venue to beat clubhouse leader Duncan Stewart (Turnhouse) by a shot.

Cementing his position at the top of the scratch order of merit, Edinburgh Golf Centre’s Craig Gordon shared third spot on 73 with Craig Imlah 
(Craigielaw) and Ross Munro (Duddingston).

On a day when 72 members enjoyed a welcome break in the weather, Uphall’s Paul Porteous claimed the overall prize, the Berwickshire Trophy.

The four-handicapper carded a net 69 to pip Duddingston’s George Wither by a shot, with Robin Cockburn (Harburn), Colin Fraser (Peebles), Donny Munro (Kingsknowe) and Mark Sokolowski (Archerfield Links) all sitting on 73.

Top trainee on 77 was Gullane’s Marc Owenson while Musselburgh’s David Thomson claimed the senior spoils with net 75.

Prestonfield’s Willie Laing continues to top the handicap order of merit as the circuit heads for Craigielaw on Wednesday.
