Lee McGregor aims to replicate Hibs hero's medal success

The Meadowbank amateur is representing Scotland at tonight’s British Senior Boxing Championships in Dunfermline, the first time the event has been held north of the border in more than a decade.

The 19-year-old is hoping to clinch a place in tomorrow night’s final with victory in the last four at the Alhambra Theatre this evening. He will learn who he faces when the draw is made later today.

And McGregor, who has been friends with Cummings since their Tynecastle High School days, is eager to lead his own celebrations in wake of Hibs’ Scottish Cup heroics last weekend.

“It’s great what Jason’s managed to achieve. I think he’s probably still partying but I spoke to him on Wednesday night and he’s coming through this weekend to support me,” McGregor said. “It’s amazing that both of us are doing so well – it’s great to see. Hopefully I can bring home a gold medal this time round. I’ve got my home show next weekend but after that the two of us will go out for a long overdue night out.”

McGregor has previously stood aloft the British podium fighting as a youth in 2014 and is eager to replicate the experience.

“I’m in the best form of my life. I haven’t lost a fight since moving up to 56kg before Christmas so it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” he said. “I can’t believe the difference myself. I believe I can win the gold tomorrow 100 per cent after getting through tonight so I can’t wait to get in there. I’m looking forward to having a wee break as it’s been pretty full on these past few months so after my home show next weekend, I’m off to Turkey with my girlfriend to chill out and relax.”

Matty McHale (52kg) and James Nelson (81kg) of Lochend and McGregor’s club-mate Sean Spence (64kg) are also representing Scotland this weekend.
