Lee McGregor is new 56kg British boxing champion

Meadowbank's Lee McGregor is the new 56kg British boxing champion after an unanimous victory over Wales' Joshua John at Dunfermline's Alhambra Theatre on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old produced a flawless display to take gold and underlined his growing reputation as one of the country’s most promising boxers.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be British champion,” he said. “I haven’t lost a fight in Britain for three years.”

McGregor’s Meadowbank club-mate Sean Spence was also successful over the weekend as he was crowned 64kg British champion after a walkover against Danny Wright of England.

Elsewhere, Lochend’s Matty McHale won silver as he lost out to compatriot and 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Reece McFadden by a split decision while James Nelson, also of Lochend, took silver in the 81kg final – Boris Crighton of Aberdeen winning gold.

In the women’s 69kg final, Lochend’s Gardner Moore was defeated by Stephanie Wroe of England but again, took silver.

Meanwhile, at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Lewis Paulin improved his professional record to 6-0 with a points win in his super featherweight bout with Barnsley’s Brad Botham as Ricky Burns made Scottish boxing history by becoming the country’s first three-weight world champion with defeat of Italian Michele Di Rocco.
