Lewis Benson keen to make up for lost time

Super lightweight boxer Lewis Benson says he is eager to make up for lost time when he contests his first competitive bout since October at Meadowbank on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old MTK fighter faces Poland’s Marek Laskowski at the Capital venue looking to put a disappointing six months behind him having been left idle due to ligament damage to his right hand.

Having racked up seven consecutive wins in his first year as a paid athlete, the four-times Scottish amateur champion has endured a frustrating time of late and only returned to training in January.

However, he feels ready to take the next step in his career and get back to doing what he does best.

“I’ve had a lot of time to reflect and right now I should have another two wins to my name,” Benson said. “I should be 9-0 as I had to pull of my last two fights. I feel I’m two wins behind having been out injured for the past five months so I need to get the win on Saturday to get me back on track. I 
want to get to 10-0 by the end of this year and then I’ll be 
ready to fight anyone in Britain.

“It’s been really tough having not being paid the extra amounts I’ve become used to. I also work for my sponsors Watermans so they’ve been really good in supporting me. I’ve been out for such a long time. But I’ve been back in the gym since the beginning of January so I’m ready to be let off the leash.

“I’m not going to rush into anything but I’m always champing at the bit. It’s just the way I’ve always been in a boxing ring and I am not going to change. I’d love to be on a big Sky Sports or BoxNation bill and put me in the away corner, that doesn’t bother me.

“I’ll have another decent crowd supporting me this weekend and that always spurs me on. I’m expecting a tough fight though.”
