Local golf round-up: Jill McNicoll retains East Lothian Ladies' Championship
Gullane's Jill McNicoll made home advantage count to make a successful defence of the East Lothian Ladies' '¨Championship.
She beat debutant Audrey Dunnett (Royal Musselburgh) by 4&3 in the final, which was played in testing conditions, after being taken the distance by past captain Barbara Biggart in the semi-finals.
Dunnett beat Karen Fullerton, another newcomer on the East Lothian County scene this season, 2&1 in the other last-four encounter.
In a closely-fought final, June Elliott beat Lorna Thomson on the last green to claim the Handicap Quaich.
• Jamie the McLear winner
Former European Tour player Jamie McLeary was in a class of his own in the Scottish qualifier for the PGA Assistants’ Championship.
He finished four shots clear of the field after carding a seven-under 65 at Deer Park, where he is now attached after entering the PGA training programme.
Others to book spots in the event at Farleigh in July included Chris Curran (Bathgate) and Zack Saltman (Winterfield).
• Foundation honours Bobby Johnston
Next month’s Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy and Vase events will see a new piece of silverware up for grabs.
The Bobby Johnston Trophy will go to the lowest score to par over 54 holes at Macdonald Cardrona from either a boy or girl. “Bobby was one of our volunteers who sadly passed away this year,” said foundation manager Scott Knowles.
“He had a great love of golf and was a great fan of junior golf, so it is fitting that his family have put this trophy up for the younger players.”
