Lothians club hopes to name initiative after Open legend

A LOTHIANS golf club is trying to secure permission to name an exciting junior initiative after one of the sport's legendary figures.

The programme at Greenburn is designed around learning from the legacy of Young Tom Morris, the only player in the event’s history to record four consecutive wins in The Open.

Inspired by PGA-qualified coach William Lumsden, the bid to link him with the West Lothian club stemmed from the fact he was married to a Fauldhouse woman.

“The initiative was piloted to a very good success rate last season,” said a Greenburn spokesman.

“We are in the process of initiating a trust and have gained endorsements from the Morris family. It already has full support and complete endorsement from Sheila Walker, Old Tom Morris’s great granddaughter. Indeed, a group of kids from the club visited her at her home in St Andrews last summer.”

As it bids to build on the excellent work carried out thus far by Lumsden, the club is currently looking for a new head pro after the departure of Scott Catlin to Affordable Golf in Glasgow.

“The new pro would obviously be heavily involved in some ways,” added the spokesman.
