Lothians golf round-up: Film premiere for Tommy's Honour

Based on the true story of Old Tom Morris and his son, Young Tom, it stars Peter Mullan, who appeared in ‘Sunshine in Leith’, and Sam Neill.

Shot entirely on location in Scotland, the film was directed by Sean Connery’s son, Jason. “It’s so exciting,” said Connery. “Not in our wildest dreams did we think it would be the Opening Gala at the EIFF.”

Tickets go on sale at 12pm on Wednesday.

• Pair qualify for PGA event

Lothians-based hopefuls had mixed fortunes in Scottish qualifier for the Titleist and FootJoy PGA Professional Championship at Ladybank.

Paul McKechnie (Braid Hills Golf Range) and Keir McNicoll (Gullane) were both among the 10 qualifiers progressing to The Oxfordshire on July 26-29.

But James McGhee (Whitehill House) missed out on a play-off for the final two spots by a shot and was joined among the non-qualifiers by Norman Huguet from Musselburgh.

• Alison McBride is top seed

Harburn’s Alison McBride is the top seed heading into the match-play phase of the Midlothian Women’s Championship at Murrayfield tomorrow.

She pipped Broomieknowe’s Wendy Nicholson for the honour by virtue of a better second round of 79 after the pair tied for first place on 158 in the stroke-play qualifying.

Two of Nicholson’s clubmates, 2013 and 2015 winner Hannah Scott and defending champion Kate McIntosh, also qualified comfortably.

• Success for Samantha and Josh

Samantha MacGregor defended her girls’ title while Josh Beveridge finished as head boy in the Stuart Hutchison Trophy at Swanston New.

Run by the Stephen Gallacher Foundation, the event is in memory of a former assistant pro at the host club who died in a road accident in 2009.

“Stuart was a great advocate of wanting to help young people learn golf and it is fitting that we hold this event at his beloved course,” said Foundation manager Scott Knowles.
