The pair are the opposing honorary captains in the Concession Cup, which is being played in Bradenton, Florida. The match between GB&I and the US was created to celebrate Nicklaus famously conceding a two-foot putt to Jacklin in the 1969 Ryder Cup.

In today’s opening foursomes, Gardner is paired with Englishman Richard Partridge.

Winterfield Golf Club has been rocked by the sudden death of Kevin Phillips, who recently retired after serving as the professional there for 26 years.

Phillips, who was 57, had been a member of the PGA since 1982 and made the occasional foray on to the Tartan Tour. He’d posted on Facebook last May, when he tendered his resignation with East Lothian Council, about beginning a “new chapter in my life” with his wife and daughter on Sanday in Orkney.

His funeral is at Seafield Crematorium on April 29 at 1pm.

• Mid Girls win Cuthbertson Cup

Midlothian Girls were worthy winners of the Cuthbertson Cup at Craigielaw, where hosts East Lothian couldn’t make home advantage count.

Represented by Emma Morrison, Eilidh Crawford, Megan Linton and Alexandra Massey, Mid beat Fife 2.5-1.5 in the morning semi-finals, in which Clackmannanshire beat East Lothian by the same margin. Mid then claimed the silverware in style with a 4-0 victory over Clackmannanshire in the final.
