Lothians round-up: Joanne Free wins Munross Trophy

Joanne Free won the Munross Trophy at Montrose Link

The 20-year-old, who is back home for the summer after finishing her freshman year at the University of Minnesota, shot rounds of 68 and 71 for a seven-under-par total.

She won by two shots from Minto’s Tara Mactaggart, with Gabrielle Macdonald of Craigielaw finshing third on 144.

Free left Goadby, winner of both the Welsh and Irish Open Stroke-Play titles recently, trailing in her wake and also Chloe Goadby, who just missed out on Curtis Cup selection.

• Braids return

Three members of the LGA Juniors side to win one match and go down fighting in another in the Dispatch Trophy will be back at the Braids on Sunday.

Jake Edgcombe (Baberton), Neil Canavan (Longniddry) and Calum Robinson (Turnhouse) are all in the field for the Lothians Boys Championship qualifying round.

So, too, are three other youngsters who played in the Dispatch Trophy last weekend - Josh Hunt (Duddingston), Sam Hall (Craigmillar Park) and Liam Currid (Bathgate).

• Jack Gallacher follows dad’s footsteps

Jack Gallacher, Stephen’s son, has been selected in the Lothians’ side for next weekend’s Scottish Boys Area Team Championship after a strong start to the season.

The Bathgate youngster will join forces with Aaron Hall (Kilspindie), Connor Wilson (Castle Park) and Connor O’Toole (Craigmillar Park) in the event on Sunday week at Eastwood.

Jack’s dad was a member of a winning Lothians side in the event at Edzell in 1992, the year after he underlined his potential by claiming the Scottish Boys’ Stroke-Play title at Crieff.
