McCallum on the right road in stylish Stirlingshire win

West Lothian-based cyclist James McCallum turned on the style to land his first Scottish road race title in Stirlingshire yesterday.

The 33-year-old Rapha Condor-Sharp rider has been in fine form over recent weeks and he was well to the fore throughout the 132-kilometre race. McCallum made his move on the 12th and final lap but, while his move shook off most of his challengers, it failed to shake of the attention of Capital rider Evan Oliphant (Team Raleigh), the defending champion, who was looking for a sixth championship win.

Oliphant had been caught out by an earlier break, but battled his way back into contention and the pair were locked together down the final straight, with McCallum – who had placed third last year in an equally tight finish – just having enough to see off his rival and erstwhile team-mate on the line. Anglo-Scot Alistair Rutherford (Vanillabikes) completed the podium.

Kayleigh Brogan (City of Edinburgh) showed the benefits of her recent trip to compete on the continent as she took the women’s title, contested over 66 kilometres. The 20 year old outsprinted Borders teenager Katy Winton (Team Kinesis Morvelo) and Scottish triathlon champion Natalie Milne (Alpine Bikes).
