Miguel Vazquez sure Josh Taylor fight is a step to world title

Former IBF world lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez says he is targeting a return to the top of the sport '“ but only after he's inflicted the first professional defeat of Josh Taylor's career.

The 30-year-old Mexican, who boasts an impressive record of 39 wins from 44 bouts and has never been stopped, is WBC Silver and Commonwealth super-lightweight champion Taylor’s next opponent. The duo will box at the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston on Saturday, November 11.

And now Vazquez, who has never fought in Europe, is hoping victory over the “Tartan Tornado” can fast track him back to the very top.

“I feel this is going to be a difficult fight, especially because I am left handed and Josh Taylor is right handed. But by doing the right kind of training and concentrating my mind on the right kind of thoughts, I think I am going to be okay,” Vazquez said. “I definitely think I can be on the top again. That is what I am training for – to be a world champion again.

“I have never been stopped in any fight. For me, the secret is all in the preparation as I leave nothing to chance and that is why I have never been knocked out. I know how to prepare for big fights like this now, how to train my mind to win.

“When I was born, my father saw my fist and told my mum that I was going to be a world champion.”
