Badminton: China crisis for Cooper

Have your say

Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper is suffering from a foot injury and has been forced to pull out of the BWF Individual World badminton championships in the Chinese city of Guangzhou from August 4-11.

The knock-on blow is that Edinburgh-born Robert Blair has also been ruled out – the pair were set to take part in the mixed doubles. But Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell will be in the team of five alongside Patrick
Mac Hugh (Kinross) in the men’s doubles.

Glasgow’s Imogen Bankier will be in action alongside Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva in the women’s doubles. They won the Finnish Open earlier this season. In the women’s singles, Scotland’s rising star Kirsty Gilmour will be out to get some positive results at the start of the Commonwealth Games season. She would have also played with Cooper in the women’s doubles but will now be able to concentrate on her main event.

Scottish team: Men’s singles: Alistair Casey (Glasgow). Women’s singles: Kirsty Gilmour (Bothwell). Men’s doubles: Martin Campbell (Edinburgh) and Patrick MacHugh (Kinross). Women’s doubles: Imogen Bankier (Glasgow)
