Edinburgh’s world junior curling champion Bruce Mouat and his new-look team endured a difficult start to the new season after failing to reach yesterday’s quarter-finals at the Oakville Classic in Ontario.

Derrick Sloan and Alastair Schreiber have joined Mouat, Bobby Lammie and Gregor Cannon for the 2016-17 campaign, and after losing their opening game, they briefly clicked when trouncing Montreal’s Jeff Stewart 8-1.

It all came down to their final group match against US skip Heath McCormick, but despite fighting back from 3-7 to 7-7, they were pipped 8-7 at the last end. “We struggled again,” admitted Mouat.
