Capital curler Gina Aitken proved she can shoot down the top seniors after reaching yesterday’s Dumfries Challenge final

The Scottish junior champion qualified from Group A following wins over Hazel Smith and Olympic alternate Lauren Gray. She then overcame her youngster sister, Karina, 5-3 in Saturday night’s quarter-finals.

Few gave her much hope in the semis after Russian Olga Zharkova’s devastating form in Group B, but Aitken counted three stones at the last end to score a stunning 6-4 win.

In the final, against Swiss skip Melanie Barbezat, Aitken led 2-0 after two ends but then conceded three at the next before finally going down 6-4.

Murrayfield junior Bruce Mouat suffered a 6-5 quarter-final defeat to Tom Brewster.
