Capital cyclist Claire Thomas made an impressive debut for her new team when she finished 15th in the four-stage Tour of Brittany.

The former Edinburgh RC rider, who is now based in Belgium was the leading Scot at last month’s British Road Race Championships in Glasgow, despite riding as an unattached individual but has now signed for the Canadian-registered GSD Gestion-Kallisto.

Thomas was tenth on the opening stage then lost time on the second day’s time trial and finished with the main bunch on each of the subsequent days to seal a fine result.

The latest performance, combined with her seventh spot in Glasgow, will add to her case for Commonwealth Games
selection, particularly given earlier results in Belgium, where she has had a win and a third-place finish.

Thomas had a delayed start to the season, a situation she explained saying: “I didn’t get much work in over the winter because I was studying Dutch full time. But that’s finished now.

“I’m now looking to do well in the big tours and I have
Ardeche at the end of the year as a target.”

She will be back in the saddle at the Tour du Limousin which starts on Thursday.
