City of Edinburgh retained their women’s Scottish Volleyball League title with a double win overs QTS Troon Team Ayrshire at the weekend.
City were under pressure in the opening two sets of the first match at South Queensferry on Saturday but pulled through 24-26, 27-25, 25-11, 25-12.
They followed up with a controlled 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 win in yesterday’s return in Troon to assure themselves of the title.
Troon were without middle blocker Kay Wheatly for the two matches but coach Vince Krawczyk did not use it as an excuse. “Edinburgh were physically better prepared than us,” he admitted. “We had our chance to go two sets up in the first match but did not take it.
“We paid the price for that and they punished us in the second match.
“They served tough and hit hard on the outside and we couldn’t cope with their power.
“We had a chance at 20-20 in the second set but blasted the ball out of court. Maybe we should show more composure on the big points but, to be fair, that was the only chance they gave us.
“Edinburgh deserve a lot of credit for the way they have come back in the second half of the season.
“Having Mel Coutts back in their team after long-term injury has made a massive difference to them and they have played really well in the last two weeks.”
